Watch Dogs: Is the Hate Deserved?

Watch Dogs: Is the Hate Deserved?

You’ve probably read all the buzz about Watch Dogs but in case you haven’t, here’s the short version: there’s a lot of hate for it. This weekend I decided to try it out and see if that hate is well-deserved or not.

First of all, I’m among those who suffered random crashes to desktop on the PC version. I noticed that it was eating up a lot of memory, which would in turn crash when it couldn’t take any more. So scratch trying the game out on PC.

Next stop: Xbox 360. No stability or performance issues there. The game was playable and stable. I did find one major bug though. One of the side missions refused to acknowledge completion so I ended up creating my own workaround for it. Specifically, a gang hideout mission ends by either killing all the bad guys or moving away from the mission area. I did the former but got no completion notice. After reloading and retrying, the same thing was happening. I decided to try the latter. I knocked the target out then walked away from mission area. Success! I then went back and killed everybody anyway.

Saints Row: The Third is the first Saints Row game I’ve played. I was actually unaware of the series until I saw a screenshot of Saints Row 2 last year. I don’t remember what was actually shown, but unlike most in-game images, it wasn’t the graphics that caught my attention. It was the absurdity of it all. The picture was silly enough to make it memorable. So when Saints Row: The Third came out I picked it up.

If GTA is the serious older brother of urban sandbox games, then Saints Row 3 is the lovable, vulgar sibling that you hang out with but won’t invite to formal events because he’d probably drop his pants. And let me tell you, Saints Row 3 is proud of dropping its pants. It’s not going to do so at every opportunity but it’s not going to shy away from it either. The game embraces its absurdity and runs with it, creating a unique and definitive experience.

As for the game itself, all you need to know about it is in the intro. It’s one of the best opening sequences I’ve seen in any game. Aside from teaching gameplay mechanics, it does an excellent job of showing you what Saints Row is all about. If you’re undecided on picking up the game or not, I suggest you play the intro level when you can.

Hands On With Multiplayer Grand Theft Auto IV

Posted by on Apr 10, 2008 in Previews |

Kotaku recently posted an article about multiplayer on Grand Theft Auto IV. Here’s a brief description of what to look forward to:

All but one of the multiplayer modes supports up to 16 players. (The co-op missions only support up to four.) The host has an amazing array of options that they can control. While setting up a game, the host can choose to modify the routine, like re-spawn times, weapon selections and friendly fire, or the unusual, like the time of day, the weather, how heavy the traffic is or how many people are on the street. You can even control police presence in your matches.
