Here’s a quick summary of my MvC3 team: X-23 is out, She-Hulk is in, I can’t do anything without Tron assist, the third party member is a tie between Dormammu and Spencer.

Some Mass Effect Love

I’m back to playing Mass Effect 2 after downloading its latest DLC, Arrival, using the Vanguard class. I know it’s late, but I haven’t been staying home for about a month now so I didn’t have access to the computer where the game was installed until the other day. In case you haven’t heard about it, Arrival is the last "bridging" DLC that will fill the gap between Mass Effect 2 and 3. If you’re interested in reading a few details about the third installment, you can get it here and here. Scans of the Game Informer source article are available here.

If you really have a lot of time to spare and would like to get into the lore of Mass Effect, this timeline article from the wiki should get you going.

The preview for the PS3 version of Mass Effect 2 showed that Bioware will include an interactive comic book called Mass Effect Genesis to summarize the events of the first game. Kotaku has the details on what it contains:

It doesn’t just summarize the original Xbox 360 and PC-only Mass Effect from 2007, it simulates the experience of playing it. The comic allows gamers to make six key decisions from the original game and see their ramifications in Mass Effect 2.

The brief digital comic starts shortly after the playable introduction to Mass Effect 2 on the PS3.

masseffect2-2010-09-12-17-39-33-07

So I just finished Lair of the Shadow Broker two days ago. Here’s what I can tell you guys about it:

The Shadow Broker is the most powerful information broker in the Mass Effect universe, a mysterious yet lingering presence capable of manipulating people, factions and perhaps even entire planets to do his bidding, all while remaining hidden in the background. Who he is and how he’s able to do allthis have been unanswered questions since the first game. Reuniting with former squadmate Liara T’Soni in the second installment reveals that he had a hand in recovering Shepard’s corpse and, somewhere in the process, earned Liara’s wrath. Lair of the Shadow Broker promises to take you to his base of operations and a chance to continue your relationship with Liara. Does it deliver?

On Mass Effect

Posted by on Feb 26, 2010 in Commentary |

After a few weeks of musing about it I think I’ve been able to pinpoint exactly what I like about Mass Effect that makes it different from WoW: it reminded me of how it felt like being the hero. WoW has a habit of addressing you as a hero. In fact, it calls everyone in the raid heroes, which kinda defeats the purpose of being one. It removes the importance of the word. It echoes Syndrome from The Incredibles movie, “And when everyone’s super, no one will be.”

I know it’s not a fair comparison, but this isn’t really a WoW-bashing post. It’s more about why I like Mass Effect. In the game, you play as Commander Shepard, recently assigned as the executive officer of the frigate SSV Normandy. Without spoiling things, let’s just say that the game gives you the opportunity to not only choose who gets to live or die, but also allows you to reshape the galaxy as you see fit. It’s fun to be in the spotlight again, to know that what you do literally sends ripples across star systems. WoW, as an MMO, is almost always about the group effort. The sense of accomplishment is different and the variety that the single-player experience brings is a breath of fresh air.

Oh, and the gameplay rocks too.
