Quarantine Gaming

The current situation with the pandemic got me thinking about what games I should play. Since everybody’s probably been spending a lot more time at home than usual I thought it would be a good idea to go to get into a game that would consume a lot of time. So I went looking for a game like that. In a way it sort of found me because while I was thinking about it, Final Fantasy XIV Starter Edition for free on the PlayStation Network. So I thought okay, let’s see what happens. Let’s get back into the game.

I’ve played it before. I think it was around 2013 or 2014 and I played it on PC. I was a Pugilist / Monk and I also remember why I left. I stopped playing the game because raiding did not feel rewarding.

Final Fantasy XIV, Zelda and Forza 4

Going Online

I’ve been playing Final Fantasy XIV a lot these days. While the game won’t topple World of WarCraft from its perch as the number one MMORPG, it’s doing enough things right to make me want to continue playing. As someone who prefers playing as DPS, my biggest gripe about it is the lack of readily available theorycrafting information, making finding the right DPS class seem like a quest on its own.

I started with a monk, ended up feeling like the effort wasn’t worth the damage output, so I then leveled a bard. Lo and behold, bards play a support role in the endgame raid. Screw that. I know some of you like playing support roles. I don’t. It’s just not my cup of tea. I then leveled a black mage. Playing one feels like bombing everything in sight. I haven’t turned my back on it yet. I mean, who doesn’t like causing explosions?

Nostalgia and Then Some

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds is an interesting game. At the beginning of the game it felt like a remake of A Link to the Past but the more I got into it the more it became new. There’s enough content in it to make it a different game altogether. I’ve been using it to fill in the time while I wait for a party to form in FFXIV’s Duty Finder. On certain days I play it exclusively.

Re-evaluating Preferences

On a whim I decided to give Forza Motorsport 4 a try. I’m surprised that I’m into it. It made me think about the last time I seriously got into a racing game and I found out that the answer was way back in high school. The game was Top Gear 2 for the SNES. I’ve kind of dismissed racing games as something I liked playing since then. Now I’m thinking of picking up Gran Turismo 6 for the PS3. Maybe I’m more into racing simulators than arcade racers like Need for Speed.

  • Needless to say, attuning to all aethernet shards in the cities is a must. Unless you enjoy running around all the time, of course.
  • Aetheryte crystals in the starting cities can also function as aethernet shards.
  • Setting an Aetheryte crystal as a favored destination will cut the teleport cost by half. You can set 3 at a time.
  • Talk to all chocokeep NPCs that you run into so you can unlock them as destinations.
  • The chocokeep NPC in the starting cities connects to all the other chocokeep NPCs that you talked to. Of course, they’re limited to their respective regions. You can’t rent a chocobo to get from Gridania to a destination in Limsa Luminsa, for example.
